As we age, loss of volume, bone and other underlying structures in dermal tissues is common and manifests as visible sagging, wrinkles and loss of firmness and texture.
The use of dermal fillers is a non-surgical option that immediately addresses such signs of aging for patients seeking to create fullness and structure and to fill in lines. The science and art of understanding each type of problem and choosing the best filler that will best address the specific problem area are reasons patients of Dr. Anita keep returning over the years.
As with other injections, patients may feel some discomfort and bruising during and after treatment. We address this by the application of a typically apply a topical anesthetic 30 to 45 minutes prior to the procedure in order to maximize patient comfort. The world of injectable fillers can feel overwhelming but can be simplified when one understands their structural composition and what problem each addresses.
There are 2 main categories of fillers recommended by Dr. Anita and both are natural substances made by the body.
Hyaluronic acid fillers work by attracting water in order to plump up or “to fill in” a problem area and effects may last from 9 months to up to 2 years. The types of HA fillers are differentiated by their density and strength or what is called the G’ or density.
Thicker, stronger G’ HA’s such as Voluma and Restylane are injected in the deeper areas of volume and structural loss while lower G’ fillers work to plump up medium to very superficial lines. A great advantage of HA fillers are that they are dissolvable with a product called hyaluronidase so any problems can be reversed immediately.
Examples are: thinning or asymmetric lips, sunken cheeks and eye areas, ear troughs, nasolabial folds, nose shape irregularities, hollow temples, receding chin and jawline, hands, thinning ear lobes and fine lip lines. The average person needs at least two syringes of many HA fillers to achieve a satisfactory result lasting 9 month or more.
Many new HA dermal fillers continue to come to market with qualities that are more specific for certain areas of the body and face. For example, there are HA now that are more pliable and some that are deliver better results for under-eye hollows than the older HA’s. Below are some of the more commonly used HA fillers but a consultation with Dr. Anita, one of the best doctors for dermal fillers in NYC, can individualize the best products for your specific area of concern.
Natural dissolvable hyaluronic acids nonsurgical injectable fillers that when used correctly can softens signs of aging and give a fresh natural appearance. Most often used for treating:
Restylane and Juvederm generally last 9 months or more. Restylane LIFT is manufactured by Galderma; Juvederm Voluma XC is manufactured by Allergan.
Both these natural, dissolvable hyaluronic acids have higher denser G’ s and are therefore placed deeper into the ski to add volume and lift to such areas as the cheek and jaw to form a more youthful facial contour and structure. These volumizing HA”s are used to rebuild the foundation of the face and often other fillers are used on top of this to fill in wrinkles or folds. Voluma lasts 1 to 2 years, Restylane Lift Lasts 1 to 2 years.
This natural dissolvable HA is a welcome addition to address the very superficial lines and tear trough area. Belotero Balance is the HA of choice for Dr. Anita when treating dark under-eye hollows and fine lip lines. Belotero generally lasts 9 months or more in most patients.
Radiesse is a natural calcium-based filler that contains microscopic particles that stimulate new collagen production into the injected area while adding lift, structural support and volume. Radiesse is injected deeper into the skin and causes an immune reaction that regenerates collagen that results in a lift the structures and improvement in deep lines. Liquid facelifts often are based on this substance as it serves to improve the appearance caused by the loss of deep structural bone and tissue resulting from natural aging or injuries.
Results last up to a year or more and the number of syringes needed depends on the individual’s degree of structural loss. After about 12 months the effect of RADIESSE will subside and re-treatment will be appropriate. However, many patients find that over time less syringes are usually needed as more collagen is generated by this filler.
Areas of volume or bone loss such as: temples, jawlines, cheekbones, jowls, earlobes, nose, hands, receding chins and any depression or structural asymmetry. Facial wasting from illness or weight loss is often treated with Radiesse.
