There are multiple ways to treat wrinkles and fine lines, but often this issue is addressed by injecting a prescription medicine of botulin toxin. Brand names such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are part of a class of chemicals called neurotoxin or neuromodulators These injectables work by blocking the nerve receptors that are on muscles so that the nerve no longer communicates to the muscle thereby decreasing movement and relaxing the underlying muscle. This causes a softening of existing lines formed by dynamic movements as well as serving to prevent the formation of lines formed by repetitive actions such as frowning.

There are three brands of neuromodulators which are very similar in action, but one may be more effective in some individuals than others. Therefore, we recommend that if one of these agents seems to have lost efficacy, one of the other brands with a slightly different chemical structure be used. There is evidence that up to 10% of persons are resistant to some form of Botulism toxin purified protein and Dr. Anita specializes in helping find solutions if you have had issues with the effectiveness and longevity of any neuromodulators.
Generally Dysport has been shown to last approximately 1 month longer and to look more natural in several studies and in our experience. The ethical use of units is very important as a patient cannot know if they are getting what they pay for. Many times Dr.Anita sees patients that have only 2 months duration which is easily remedied when using the correct units and correct depth of injection
Daxxify is the newest botox type modulator. It is the first and only peptide-powered FDA approved longer lasting neuromodulator( 9 month or more) The cost is higher but for some people this is offset by duration and by what we have found a superior brow lift to other neurotoxins.
Results are generally noticed after 4 to 10 days. Dr. Anita recommends all patients return for a follow up visits at around 2 weeks post injection in order to assess appearance and ensure patients are happy with a natural result.
How Long does it take to work and does it Hurt?
The injection is usually quick with minimal discomfort. However, we know everyone has a different pain threshold and we can provide topical anesthesia 30 minutes prior to treatment if so desired.
In general, neurotoxins last 3 to 6 months with an average of 4 months. Over time, the local effects will subside gradual and retreatment is necessary. Wrinkle prevention is also a common reason for having this procedure.
Is there downtime?
No generally there is no bruising and any swelling lasts only 5 minutes.
