How does Ultherapy work and why is it different from lasers and RF?

Ultherapy, unlike lasers (Fraxel CO2) or radiofrequency devices (ex. Thermage) which are unable to deliver high enough temperatures or directed injury without causing serious scarring and burns, is able to generate focused ultrasound at the exact skin depth and temperature for optimal collagen regeneration. This heat initiates the body’s natural injury response to stimulate growth of fresh, new collagen, and strengthens weak collagen. The process of collagen regeneration is known as neocollagenesis, and the results depend on the body’s own collagen-building process to produce younger and very natural results

Therefore, the body’s own regenerative response gradually lifts and firms such areas as the eyebrow, neck, knees and elbows as well smoothes lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. In fact, it is the only non-invasive procedure specifically indicated by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest.

How long is the Treatment?

The length of treatment depends on the area being treated and your individual treatment plan. A face and neck procedure typically take 90 minutes.

What does it feel like?

Although reports of pain are abundant on the Internet, Dr. Anita finds that one of the possible reasons is only about 15% of practitioners are performing the optimal treatment. If severe pain is present, this usually indicates the ultrasound is going too deeply. As the ultrasound energy is delivered, Patients often feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited at precise depths under the skin but generally report this sensation as very manageable and lasting only during the procedure. Since comfort levels vary among individuals, we may dispense medications to prevent anxiety and pain adjusted for each patient’s response.

Amazingly, most patients experience no downtime, after Ultherapy and resume their normal activities. The skin may appear slightly red initially but this should disappear within a few hours. Some patient’s experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the treated area, but this is also temporary. For full product and safety information please go to ultherapy.com/IFU.

Since this is a procedure that stimulates each person’s own collagen production, the results vary depending on the individual healing response but most results begin to be seen in around 3 to 6 months. However, many experience an almost immediate lifting and tightening but with photographs taken every 3 months for a year, we are able to monitor the progress more accurately… The natural aging process.

Most patients only need one treatment per area every 1 to 2 years. However, based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and your individual collagen-building process, some patients benefit from additional treatments.

How Long Does Ultherapy Last?

After Ultherapy treatments, natural aging process is slowed but continues so we do recommend maintenance at least every 2 years. The effects of each treated area generally reach a peak at about 9 months.

Who should get Ultherapy?

For people who suffer from mild to moderate skin laxity, sallow color and superficial wrinkling where the skin begins to look less firm, we recommend a free consult with Dr. Anita and her staff to review a treatment plan. We think of Ultherapy as a deep structural foundation upon which other treatments such as fillers, PRP and neuromodulators are built upon. For anyone considering a face lift or worrying about a sagging face or “turkey neck”, or anyone who suffers from mild to moderate skin laxity, sallow coloring and superficial wrinkling where the skin begins to look less firm, we recommend a free consult with Dr. Anita and her staff to review a customized treatment plan. Our patients include people who have a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on their neck and abdomen, sagging under the chin and around the knees and elbows as well wrinkles on the decollate..
