Botox vs Dysport vs Xeomin: Which Is Right for Me?

Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® are all prescription neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A, and all three temporarily relax the muscles behind expression lines. They differ in formulation, diffusion, onset and duration, and their units are not interchangeable, so none of them is simply “stronger” or “better”. The right one for you depends on your facial anatomy, your goals and how you responded to any previous treatment, and that is decided at a consultation.

At Dr. Anita Medical Aesthetics in Cashiers, NC, all three are offered alongside Daxxify®, and every treatment is planned and performed by Dr. Anita Dormer, MD. This guide explains what the three have in common, how they differ, and how the choice is made, so you can arrive at your consultation with the right questions.

What do Botox, Dysport and Xeomin have in common?

All three belong to the same family of treatments, called neuromodulators. Each is a prescription injectable derived from botulinum toxin type A. Injected in small amounts into selected facial muscles, they temporarily reduce the muscle activity that creates dynamic wrinkles: the lines that form when you frown, squint, smile or raise your eyebrows.

Because they work on muscle movement, all three are commonly used for:

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes

Results from every neuromodulator are temporary. That is not a drawback in itself: it means your treatment can be adjusted over time as your muscles, preferences and aging process change.

How are Botox, Dysport and Xeomin different?

The differences are in how each product is formulated and how it behaves after injection, not in what it is for. In practical terms, the products can differ in:

  • Formulation: each brand is manufactured differently.
  • Diffusion: how the product spreads from the injection point, which matters in some areas more than others.
  • Onset: how quickly you begin to see an effect.
  • Duration: how long the effect lasts for you.

One point causes a lot of confusion: units are not interchangeable between products. A unit of Botox® is not the same as a unit of Dysport® or Xeomin®, so comparing unit counts or prices per unit between brands does not tell you which is more effective or better value. A careful plan is built around the product chosen, not around the number.

You can read more about each product on our Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® pages.

Is one of them the strongest or the best?

No. It is a common belief that the cheapest or the “strongest” neuromodulator must be the best choice, but the products are not ranked that way. A natural-looking result depends far more on treatment planning and injection technique than on the brand. The right product is the one that suits your anatomy, the area being treated, your goals and your history, and that can be a different answer for two people of the same age.

Which one is right for me?

Dr. Anita decides this with you at a consultation rather than by a fixed rule. During the assessment she looks at:

  • Your facial movement and muscle activity
  • The lines you want to soften and where they sit
  • Your skin condition, facial anatomy and balance
  • Any previous neuromodulator treatment and how you responded to it
  • Your medical history and what you want the result to look like

Her stated philosophy is to enhance your natural features and best characteristics rather than correct every line, so the aim is softer lines with natural expression, not a frozen look.

Can I switch from Botox to Dysport or Xeomin?

Yes, switching is something patients ask about, and it is discussed at consultation. If you already have Botox® elsewhere and are considering Dysport®, Xeomin® or Daxxify®, bring details of your past treatments: the product, the areas treated, and how long the result lasted for you. That history helps Dr. Anita recommend a product and plan, and follow-up after treatment helps guide future dosing and product choice.

Where does Daxxify fit in?

Daxxify® is another neuromodulator the practice offers. It may be considered for appropriate candidates who are looking for longer-lasting wrinkle reduction. As with the other products, how long results last varies from person to person, and the recommendation is based on your anatomy and the outcome you want.

Neuromodulators or dermal fillers?

Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® relax muscle movement. Dermal fillers such as Restylane®, Juvederm® and Radiesse® do something different: they add volume. Lines that only appear when you move your face usually point toward a neuromodulator, while lost volume points toward a filler. Some patients benefit from one, some from both, and Dr. Anita can tell you which suits your concern.

Who performs the treatment?

Treatment at Dr. Anita Medical Aesthetics is physician-led. Injections are carried out by Dr. Anita Dormer, MD, who launched her cosmetic medical practice in 2000 after more than 20 years as a critical care and pulmonary specialist. Her published biography describes her as a triple-boarded, fellowship-trained physician and a former associate and assistant professor at major universities. Frequently asked questions

How soon will I see results?

Per the practice’s experience, neuromodulator results are generally noticed within approximately four to ten days, and onset can vary with the specific product used. A follow-up is recommended to assess your result.

How long do the results last?

Results are temporary. How long they last depends on the product, the treatment area, the dose, your muscle activity and your individual response, so maintenance intervals are discussed at your consultation. If you feel your results fade early, read why your Botox may be wearing off faster than expected.

Will I look frozen?

Looking overdone is the most common worry for first-time patients. A natural result depends on planning and technique rather than the brand, and Dr. Anita takes a conservative approach that aims to soften lines while keeping your natural expressions.

How much does it cost?

The practice does not publish set prices. Cost depends on the product chosen, the treatment area, the amount of product needed and your goals, and it is explained at your consultation. Because units differ between brands, a per-unit price alone is not a fair comparison.

Are there risks or side effects?

Like any medical treatment, neuromodulators carry possible risks and side effects. At your consultation Dr. Anita reviews your medical history and explains the risks, contraindications and aftercare before deciding whether treatment is appropriate for you.
